For now the clues point to the Persona, Tales of and Dragon Quest series

Sony is apparently looking to make a pretty big announcement regarding a major Japanese developer making something for the PlayStation 4 at an upcoming game show.

The information comes from former Famitsu Editor-in-Chief, and current Kadokawa Director, Hirokazu Hamamura, who mentions that the performance of the PlayStation 4 computer entertainment system in Japan has been less than stellar, and while the numbers are not exactly bad, they're nowhere near the level of North American and European sales.

He states that, in spite of the fact that the Japanese market is dominated by mobile games, a major developer told him that there would be a big announcement soon, one that would be relevant to the local market and that could potentially boost Sony's sales in the region.

While Hamamura doesn't explicitly mention which game show he is talking about, the clues point to the upcoming Tokyo Game Show in September, which would make more sense than Gamescom 2014, since the announcement is related to the Japanese market.

For the time being, the contents of the announcement are a complete mystery, and while a third-party developer seems to be involved, no further details are available. The most likely candidates are some of the very popular Japanese franchises, like Tales of, Persona or Dragon Quest, one of which will most likely see a PlayStation 4 release in the near future.

We'll keep an eye on things and come back with the information as soon as it becomes available.
