There are drawbacks to using two GamePads with the Wii U

Nintendo has confirmed that its upcoming Wii U home console will support the use of two GamePads at the same time, but doing so will halve the framerate of the game currently being experienced.

The Nintendo Wii U was presented last year as a concept and this year, at E3 2012, as a final version alongside its special GamePad controller.

While initially it was believed that only one GamePad could be used with a Wii U, Nintendo revealed yesterday that two such devices were supported by the console.

Don’t get excited, however, as using two GamePads means that a regular game that runs at 60 frames per second would see its framerate drop to just 30fps, according to Nintendo president Satoru Iwata.

What’s more, games need to feature support for two GamePads in order for this to work. The titles that will be launched alongside the Wii U this holiday season, however, won’t have such a feature implemented.

Nintendo is expected to continue working on the technology and might reveal more details in the future.
