The Wii U is not doing great and the 3DS might soon get a replacement and Nintendo seems to finally be convinced that it needs to take more risks with its impressive list of characters in order to attract a new generation of gamers.

Satoru Iwata, the leader of the company, is telling investors in a special call after the reveal of financial results that, “To establish new and growing areas through the active utilisation of character IP, it is important for Nintendo to take risks ourselves and come up with interesting ways to use our character IP.”

He did not offer any sort of details on how Mario and Zelda might be used in the future, but Nintendo did make it clear that it had no plans to launch mobile versions of its biggest titles.

In the coming months, the company plans to introduce a new set of figures that will be offered for both the 3DS and Wii U and will create an entirely new gameplay experience for fans.

It’s unclear whether this is part of the new use of characters philosophy.

Nintendo has already said that it will ramp up releases in the coming months in order to make the Wii U more attractive to potential customers.
