Despite the smaller than expected sales of the Wii U home console, Nintendo says that it is not yet ready to abandon it or the hardware maker and that big characters like Mario are not yet ready to appear on smartphones.

Satoru Iwata, the leader of the company, is quoted by Eurogamer as saying that, "The spread of smart devices does not spell the end of game consoles. It’s not that simple. It doesn’t mean that we should put Mario on smartphones."

The statement comes after shares of the company tumbled in trading because of an expected loss projected for the end of the current fiscal year.

Projected sales of the Wii U have gone down from 9 to 2.8 million and the 3DS is also expected to sell less devices.

Iwata has said that he has no plans to resign at the moment, but the company might undergo a management shuffle.
