Video game publisher and hardware maker Nintendo says that it is ready to launch more Wii U based games that offer cross-platform play, with official announcements coming in the next few months.

The statement from Nintendo received by VG247 reads: “We can confirm that cross-platform functionality is possible in certain titles that play on Nintendo 3DS and Wii U, as well as other video game systems not made by Nintendo. We are committed to helping developers realise the full potential of their software on Nintendo systems.”

So far, the cross-platform play is offered for Disney Infinity from Disney Interactive Studios, Cubeman 2 from Three Sprockets and Pure Chess from Ripstone.

Traditionally, Nintendo has tried to keep gamers linked to its own ecosystem of devices and the fact that it is ready to open it up might mean that the company is willing to accept that the Wii U will not be a commercial success in the long term.
