Developer Ripstone, currently working on Pure Chess and Knytt Underground, says that Nintendo is ready to give teams permission to implement cross-platform play that involves the Wii U home console.

Phil Gaskell, the leader of the company, is quoted by VG247 as saying his team asked for the feature to be implemented, but expected the request to be denied.

Nintendo replied that, “yep, no problem. You can have other console players playing against Wii U players. You can have smartphone players play against them. No problem.”

Apparently, Sony also seems willing to allow cross-platform play for the PlayStation 3 and the Vita and in the future, more games might introduce the feature.

Nintendo has not yet offered an official position on the statements coming from Ripstone.

Traditionally, console makers have been unwilling to allow cross-platform gameplay because they promote rival hardware use.
