Nintendo is one of the most conservative companies in gaming, but it seems to acknowledge the problems with the current retail business model, according to statements coming from president Satoru Iwata.

He tells investors, according to Gamasutra, that, “I believe the future of the video game industry depends on the number of games developers release that consumers consider to be fresh and worth paying for.”

He seems to shift the blame for his company’s trouble on mobiles and tablets, which allow players to play on the move while paying lower prices.

The comments are interpreted by some fans as a sign that Nintendo might be ready to lower the price of the games it delivers digitally to the Wii U and the 3DS handheld.

Iwata also believes that smaller developers need to be attracted to home consoles in order to broaden their game offer.
