Plans are made to stop manufacturing the home console

A sad day for Nintendo fans as the company has announced that they will cease production of the Wii in Japan, making it official on their Japanese website.

Being considered one of the most successful home consoles, the Wii entered an elite club of just three consoles that have managed to sell at such a high level along with PlayStation One and PlayStation 2. In July, the company was happy to announce that sales surpassed the 1 million mark.

When first announced production in 2004, the console went on to become the most flourishing home console in the company's 125-year history and sold out almost immediately.

However, despite such a success, it is not Nintendo's most popular games device, with the first and second places being occupied by Game Boy and Nintendo DS. It seems that Game Boy recorded a spectacular number of 118 million sales, therefore being considered its all-time best seller.

Another version of the Wii, the Wii Mini was released in March, but it was unfortunately considered a rudimentary version of the previous one. This particular device lacked online functionality and did not feature an SD card slot or support GameCube backwards compatibility.

The future looks uncertain for the Wii Mini, as it is not clear whether production will cease for this device too or whether this model will go on to replace the standard version of Wii.
