Video game publisher Nintendo apologizes for the lack of inclusions of same sex relationships in the upcoming Western version of Tomodachi Life and promises that for a future title in the series it will strive to offer more options for gamers to explore.

An official site statement explains that, "We apologize for disappointing many people by failing to include same-sex relationships in Tomodachi Life. Unfortunately, it is not possible for us to change this game’s design, and such a significant development change can’t be accomplished with a post-ship patch."

The company says that all its video games are designed to create communities around solid gameplay mechanics and a sense of fun and that it never meant to disappoint its audience.

Tomodachi Life has been out in Japan for more than one year and will be delivered to Western markets later in the year, exclusively on the Nintendo 3DS handheld.

The company has not said whether it is actively working on a full sequel that would integrate same sex relationships or if the franchise's fate depends on its future sales.

Earlier Nintendo explained that Tomodachi Life was not a game designed for social commentary and explained that it patched out some content out of the game purely for reasons related to gameplay.
