The offer is only available in Japan, and only for purchases of new handhelds

Nintendo has revealed that come June, Pokemon X and Pokemon Y will be given for free to Japanese adopters of a new Nintendo 3DS XL (or LL, as the handheld is known there).

This incredible offer is part of Nintendo's Recommended Software promotion, offering a coupon for every new system sold, which users can use to download a free game of their choice, from a small list of pretty big titles.

In addition to this, if none of the games currently featured on the list seems appealing, users can always hold out and wait to see what titles will become available over the course of the next month, as the coupons are redeemable until September.

Between April 26 and May 30, the selection of free games was made out of Animal Crossing: New Leaf and Yo-Kai Witch. Those games will be replaced by Pokemon X, Pokemon Y, Pokemon Art Academy, Animal Crossing and Puzzle & Dragons Z in June.

The offer seems like overkill, considering that the Nintendo 3DS already is the top-selling hardware platform in Japan, but a nice incentive such as this, with a selection of free quality games to choose from, is never a bad thing.

The only thing left now is to wait and see whether Nintendo intends to offer such a deal to western markets, a move which might improve the 3DS' penetration.
