The Nintendo 3DS handheld has managed to sell more than 5 million units on the United States market since it has been launched during March 2011.

The device has managed to outpace the initial sales of the normal DS, despite having a troubled launch period and only becoming an important presence in the NPD Group compiled sales figures only after a price cut was introduced in August 2011.

Just three months before, Nintendo announced that the 3DS had managed to reach the 4.5 million sales mark.

At the moment, the company is getting ready to launch the XL version of its new handheld, which is supposed to have a 90 percent bigger screen and offer more battery life and space for internal storage.

The new device will arrive on the United States market on August 19 and gamers in Japan and in Europe will be able to get it in late July.
