It no longer makes sense to create dedicated hardware

Katsuhiro Harada, a producer working on the Tekken series, says that a potential PlayStation 5 will no longer be a physical device but a service that Sony will house in a server-based cloud.

The statement comes just as there’s a little more than one full month to go before the launch of the PlayStation 4, which is an actual home console that will cost players 399 dollars or Euro.

The developer is quoted by VG247 as saying that, “I think in the future things will be played on the service, rather than on the hardware.”

He adds, “The PS5 probably won’t have a main console, but just the screen and controller. So what remains will be just the name of the service.”

The Tekken creator believes that Sony might opt to change the name to PlayStation Network and that both the company and rival Microsoft will take more inspiration from Valve and its Steam service.
