The indie game is a beautiful visual novel, scheduled for release in 2015

Nero is one of the first independent video games to come out of Microsoft's ID@Xbox program, and it just got a nifty CGI trailer at Gamescom 2014 in Germany.

Microsoft's self-publishing indie program is bound to deliver a ton of interesting games to the company's latest computer entertainment system, the Xbox One, and Nero is among the first to come out.

The trailer is nothing but CGI, so it doesn't actually tell anything about the game, and developer Storm in a Teacup is keeping a tight lid on it for now.

However, the animation does a pretty good job of hinting at the general mood of the project, said to draw inspiration from Thatgamecompany's Journey and from Myst, and to be more of a visual novel than a traditional action title, so it's definitely something to be excited about.

Taking into account the fact that Journey was lauded by both critics and players, in spite of not having any actual gameplay or story, and that the game is rumored to be headed for the PlayStation 4, for Microsoft to have its very own atmospheric indie exploration game would definitely be an advantage in the company's attempt to catch up to Sony.

Microsoft seems to be determined to catch up with its rivals in the indie scene, so we're likely to see more coming from this front as Gamescom progresses this week.
