Matt Lightfoot, a developer working on DayZ, says that mods are still important for PC gaming and can enhance the popularity of a video games even if they are buggy and lack some content.

He tells AusGamers that, “People are still streaming DayZ, and getting thousands of followers every night, and this is on a buggy mod for a three year old game — we just didn’t think it was going to happen.”

The developer says that ArmA is a very modable platform because it allows players to bring in new content like aircraft and entire new missions with no restrictions.

Lightfoot also mentions Half-Life and Black Mesa on the Source engine as examples of mods that can put an unique spin on the core game experience.

At the moment DayZ is getting a standalone version that will also have extensive modding options.
