The 16x16 blocks restriction makes users come up with interesting creations

The latest craze in Minecraft is building "chunk houses," which have been popping up all over the internet like crazy.

In Minecraft, chunks are the basic building blocks of worlds. Each world's surface is made out of an infinite number of chunks (in the PC version at least), each of which account for an area of 16x16 blocks.

A chunk house is a challenge to build something by limiting yourself to a 16-by-16 plot of land without going outside of its boundaries, and is similar to how some minimalistic Lego diorama contests limit entries to a 16x16 base plate in order to dare contestants to use their creativity in innovative ways.

The 16 by 16 limitation does seem to not allow for much on paper, but intrepid builders have shown that any space can be put to good use, as long as there is a will, and just as with the Tardis, the houses are much bigger on the inside.

The original house was posted on Reddit by user Spelunkding, and was quickly followed by a lot of subsequent creations, which you can find on the Minecraft Reddit section.

The ability for the game's 54+ million users to come up with new ways to channel their creative juices through Mojang's building game hardly comes as a surprise anymore, but it's still enjoyable to see what people are up to.
