Minecraft, the hit independent game that appeared a couple of years ago, has sold over 6 million copies on the PC, while reaching 9.2 million units sold across the PC, Xbox 360, Android or iOS platforms.
Minecraft started out as a pet project for designer Markus “Notch” Persson but it quickly became a phenomenon after being released as a digital download while it was still in its alpha stage.
Since then, the game was released as a full-fledged PC game, and it also reached platforms like the iOS and Android, in the form of Minecraft: Pocket Edition. Recently, Minecraft arrived on the Xbox 360, via the Xbox Live Arcade.
After hearing that it sold over 1 million units on the XBLA in under a week, Persson, together with business developer Daniel Kaplan, revealed that a total of 9.2 million games were purchased by customers across all platforms, with over 6 million copies sold on PC.
This is quite impressive for something that started as a one-man project and it’s nothing but good news for Mojang, the studio founded by Persson, which is working on a variety of new games.
