Enemies will have memories and will react based on them

Michael de Plater, the game director working on Middle-Earth: Shadow of Mordor, says that his upcoming game is designed to use a new procedural system to create enemies that are directly shaped by the action of the player.

The Nemesis tech aims to deliver a video game world that seems to be alive and reacts to how the player approaches it.

He tells Polygon that, “When players can create their own stories, it becomes so much more meaningful and memorable. In every game, you fight so many nameless grunts, and we didn’t want to do that. We wanted to make those more interesting and give them more possibility without creating scripted villains.”

Middle-Earth: Shadow of Mordor will take place between The Hobbit and The Lord of the Rings and is designed to follow a ranger with Wraith-like powers as he tries to take out those who killed his family.

Launch is planned for 2014 on the Xbox One, the PlayStation 4, the PC and current-gen consoles.
