Microsoft admits that its Xbox One home console might face a tough market in Japan, where Sony is set to dominate home console sales when it launches the PlayStation 4, on February 22.

Alan Bowman, the Microsoft Australia vice president in charge of retail sales and marketing, is quoted by VG247 as saying that, “Being a local brand makes such a huge difference in Japan. Sony are so strong in Japan as its their home base, and they certainly get a lot of support from the customer as well as the ecosystem – the local third-party developers, who primarily publish for Sony.”

Microsoft will try to promote the Xbox One by creating content based on the preferences of local gamers, a strategy that is also being evaluated for markets like South Korea and Taiwan.

The Xbox One is currently offered on 13 core markets and the company has not yet announced exactly when it will be officially launched in other territories.
