Microsoft says that the new Xbox One home console is designed to run up to four applications at the same time, although just one of them can actually be a video game.

Destructoid cites Albert Penello, an executive in charge of the launch, as saying that the number was chosen in order to make sure that players can stay connected to friends and watch video content at the same time.

Microsoft has already explained that it is working with the National Football League in the United States to offer an improved game day experience.

The company also says that six users can stay logged into the same Xbox One at the same time, allowing them to quickly switch between types of content and apps.

Kinect use and controller holding will decide which player is active at any given time.

Recently, Sony has revealed that four accounts can stay connected on a PlayStation 4 at the same time.
