The team at Microsoft in charge of the Xbox One launch is warning all users that the information about making the console backwards compatible that is circulating on the Internet is entirely fake and can lead to a bricked console.

Larry Hryb, aka Major Nelson, writes on Twitter that, “To be clear there is no way to make your Xbox One backwards compatible & performing steps to attempt this could make your console inoperable.”

The feature was much requested by players, but Microsoft explained that it could not be implemented because of cost and hardware concerns.

Previously, intrepid users discovered the development menu of the Xbox One, but the company is also advising gamers to avoid trying to enable it because it can affect their hardware.

The Xbox One was launched on November 22 in 13 core countries and gamers in the rest of the world will get it in 2014.
