Phil Spencer, the leader of the Microsoft Studios, says that his company does not actually need to own entire development studios in order to make sure that it delivers important, successful titles for the coming Xbox One.

The executive is quoted by The Official Xbox Magazine as saying that, “I think to some out there there's a fixation with which studios you own, which studios you work with, and for better or worse I'm not fixated on that.”

During the Xbox 360 era, Microsoft developed a strong relation with Epic Games, which led to the creation of the Gears of War series, one of the most successful in the history of gaming and a strong driver of consoles sales.

Spencer says that the same situation can be replicated on the Xbox One and has pointed to companies like Insomniac, Crytek and Respawn Entertainment as the likely sources for blockbuster titles.
