The full relationship between the two elements of Metal Gear Solid V, Ground Zeroes and The Phantom Pain, is not yet entirely clear, but Hideo Kojima is willing to give some more details on how they will influence each other.

The series creator says that the extended prologue will take place in 1975 and will allow players to experience a series of events that lead to a big catastrophe, which in turn, provides one of the biggest themes for The Phantom Pain.

Kojima is quoted by Polygon as saying that, “Unless you play GZ, you won't understand why retaliation is one of MGS5's main themes. It really is the 'ground zero' of Snake's story.”

The rest of Metal Gear Solid V will take place in 1984 and will use an open world structure.

The new title, powered by the Fox Engine, will be launched in 2014 and will appear on current and next-gen devices, as well as on the PC.
