The feature seems similar to how Dark Souls handles its "loosely connected" multiplayer

Metal Gear Solid 5: The Phantom Pain will feature a multiplayer component similar to that of the Dark Souls series, where players will be able to raid other player's Mother Base facility.

"I cannot talk too much, but for people who saw the presentation, it ends with your Mother Base being attacked. People can infiltrate you, and you can infiltrate other people's Mother Base," Hideo Kojima, Metal Gear Solid 5: The Phantom Pain director, has said in an interview with CVG.

"People who want to create a Mother Base in a very detailed way will be able to design it through the interface, or using their smart device," Kojima reveals, implying that players will also be able to build up some defenses.

The feature will most likely come with the option to turn it off for those who don't want their carefully laid out bases to be trampled by armies of mouth breathers, and the developer has refrained from making any more reveals.

Most likely, you'll be able to invade other people's bases and defend your own in turn, just like in the Dark Souls games, but there's no information on whether attacks can happen while Snake is out and about in the open-world, meaning that he would have to travel back and defend his base.
