The development team creating The Sims 4 at Maxis says that they are making sure that sadness and other associated emotional states are not treated as negative by the game but simply open up a new range of options for characters.

Grant Rodiek, a producer working on the new title, tells VG247 that, “We realized if we went down the path of exploring these deep emotional states, and that if we just made it so that sadness is frustrating and not fun, that game would be terrible and nobody would ever want to be sad.”

Apparently, the Woo-Hoo relationship option is not available for those Sims who are sad, but they will be able to solve other game challenges that would be inaccessible if they are happy all the time.

The new Maxis title is built around a new emotional engine that’s designed to make the characters more lifelike and extend the range of options that gamers can implement.

The Sims 4 will be launched in 2014 and platforms have not yet been confirmed.
