Developer BioWare and publisher Electronic Arts have expanded on their recently announced plans to launch copies of Mass Effect 3 into space (actually, more like the higher reaches of the atmosphere) using a number of weather balloons.

The official site of the game now has a special section dedicated to the space-bound copies of the game, including a trailer that better explains the process and some information about all the launch dates.

The first one takes place today in San Francisco and there are other plans until Berlin, in Germany, and February 29, when the entire promotion ends.

The Mass Effect 3 space-bound copies will go up with tracking devices and the player who gets to the place where they reach the ground first will get a Space Edition fan pack and will be able to then play the game early.

Runners-up will also get prizes.

The game will launch in early March on the PC, the Xbox 360 and the PlayStation 3.
