Mass Effect games can be about shooting or role playing but, at least to a large variety of players, it’s also about love, whether it’s the romantic relationship your version of Commander Shepard is exploring with any of the available characters, or the various acts you’re witnessing through your adventures.

Mass Effect 3 doesn’t stray from this, as right from the beginning you get to check out two different displays of love.

Those who haven’t played the game’s first three or four hours should avoid the rest of the article, as minor spoilers are present.

After his or her adventures on Mars, Commander Shepard reaches the Citadel, a place where all the advanced races of aliens in the universe meet and plan their future.

While you mostly walk around some of the Citadel’s different sections, one particular scene shows that the stories in Mass Effect’s universe don’t necessarily tie into Shepard’s adventures. During it, a Turian soldier talks with his Asari wife about their relationship and what will happen to it when he needs to leave her in order to go and fight the Reapers.

The dialog is quite emotional and really drives the point home that, while Shepard’s story is important, there are still lots of other characters in Mass Effect that live their own lives.

The second impressive love scene relates to one of Shepard’s colleagues, Lieutenant Cortez, the armory officer and shuttle pilot. If you talk to him about his family, he says that he had a husband on one of the human colonies that were obliterated by the Collectors in the second game.

While his sexual orientation isn’t new, as gay characters and romances have been portrayed in BioWare games before, the next time you visit the armory you’ll see him watching a recording of his husband and crying.

These two touching moment shows that love in the Mass Effect, whether it’s heterosexual or homosexual, can prosper even in its virtual environment.

What did you believe about love in Mass Effect 3? Did you approve of such touching moments or would you want at least some of them to disappear?
