Mass Effect 3 impressed us through a variety of things, from its great role playing shooter mechanics to the impact even small choices from previous games had on the story of the new title.

It’s also worth pointing out just how impressive the game is visually, not just because it has pretty graphics, but also because its environments always feel fresh and exciting.

Mass Effect 3 sees the protagonist, Commander Shepard, on a race across the galaxy to rally all of the alien races and unite them against the Reapers that are currently devastating earth and other areas of the universe.

As such, the hero, or heroine, depending on your choice, needs to visit all sorts of alien worlds, from Palaven to Sur’Kesh or Tuchanka, as well as the Citadel, which is the meeting ground for all of the alien races in the galaxy.

While previous games in the series managed to deliver some interesting environments, Mass Effect 3 really kicks things up a notch, as each planet and each location feels different and impressive.

From seeing the gritty reality of the Reaper invasion on Earth or Palaven, to the precise feeling evoked by Sur’Kesh or the Citadel, or the devastated wasteland that is Tuchanka, you really get acquainted with the different locations of Mass Effect 3.

What’s more, the environments in these worlds are also kept varied, as you’re not just trudging along on Tuchanka looking at remnants of the once mighty Krogan civilization. You get to explore some of its ruined temples, experience a section through the darkness of its catacombs, as well as check out the derelict industry of the alien planet.

Besides the impressive visual design, the graphics are very sharp, as BioWare managed to deliver a lot of improvements over the standard Unreal Engine 3 technology. Sure, the studio exaggerated a bit with the lens flare effects, but it seems that you can’t build a sci-fi story without some light shining into your eyes.

Mass Effect 3 is available for the PC, PS3 and Xbox 360 all around the world.
