The support requirements for the move are prohibitive

Hideo Kojima, the creator of the Metal Gear Solid series, says that his company and publisher Konami are no longer interested in licensing their new Fox Engine to indie developers and educational projects.

When the new technology was initially announced, the game maker said that he was interested in supporting a number of smaller projects.

Gamasutra found out during a MGS V preview that, “While, yes, the engine has been shared around internally at Konami, a lot of maintenance will be involved if we're to get the FOX Engine in a workable enough state to license it.”

The Fox Engine is at the moment set to power the upcoming Metal Gear Solid V: The Phantom Pain, which uses an open world experience and will be available in 2014.

The technology is also used for Pro Evolution Soccer 2014, which will be offered on PC and home consoles before the end of the month.
