Hideo Kojima, the leader of the development steam working on Metal Gear Solid V: The Phantom Pain, says that he is making player choice the number one mechanic for his new title, even if all the familiar elements of the series will still be present.

The game maker is telling Gamasutra that, “In the past, the games of the Metal Gear franchise have all been saying 'here is the story’. It's their decision to carry the game.”

The statement came as Konami opened up a new studio entirely dedicated to Metal Gear Solid.

A limited number of players got access to a live demo of the game that suggests the open world structure of The Phantom Pain uses mechanics similar to those seen in both Splinter Cell and Assassin’s Creed.

Kojima also believes that each mission should have the same structure as a well-produced television series episode.

Metal Gear Solid V will be launched in 2014 on the PC, current and next-gen consoles.
