Microsoft's Phil Spencer, the new leader of the Xbox division, has thanked early adopters for buying the Xbox One with the Kinect sensor, and explained that the small device is critical to the long term success of the company, despite offering a new, cheaper Xbox One without the sensor bundled into the package.

The Xbox One came out last November and was sold in a package costing 499 USD/EUR that included the actual console, a controller, and the new and improved Kinect sensor. When compared to Sony's PS4, which cost just 399 USD/EUR, many consumers went with the Japanese device, resulting in quite poor sales for Microsoft.

The company bit the bullet and launched this week a new Xbox One bundle that cost just 399 USD/EUR but did not include a Kinect, leaving many early adopters feeling like guinea pigs.

While talking with GameTrailers, via GamingBolt, Microsoft's Phil Spencer thanked them for their loyalty and explained that the Kinect is still important in the company's Xbox One vision.

"First all of thank you. I appreciate them signing in the beginning and I want them to know that with me being the head of Xbox that Kinect is critical to our long term success. It fundamentally is. Our choice to give the consumer a price choice, I think in the long run it will be good thing for Xbox as well as Kinect."

The Kinect will be sold separately but only starting this fall.
