Kaz Hirai, who is the current president of Sony, has announced that he has retired from his role as chairman and representative director of Sony Computer Entertainment, completing his move to the highest level of the company.

Hirai is currently both president and chief executive officer and the former holder of the two positions, Howard Stringer, is now the chairman of the board of directors at Sony.

Hirai will still be a part time member of the Sony Computer Entertainment board in order to be able to coordinate with the important division.

Analysts believe that Hirai’s move to the top of the Sony leadership means that the company is now more interested in its video game hardware and software business rather than on the old television and mobile phone divisions.

Kaz Hirai has admitted that Sony now has a number of significant problems and that the company needs to revise its strategy and to slim down in order to return to profitability.
