Can Respawn's brand new online shooter live up to the hype?

What we know:

Titanfall is the first project from Respawn Entertainment, the studio created by the founders of Call of Duty developer Infinity Ward.

The fact that it's a multiplayer-only first-person shooter, just like the core Call of Duty experience, has also piqued the interest of many fans, especially since CoD is currently one of the biggest franchises out there.

Unlike Activision's big series, however, Titanfall takes place in a futuristic setting, with players controlling pilots who can fight against others either on foot or by maneuvering hulking mechs, called Titans, on the battlefield.

Pilots, by themselves, are quite agile, being able to run on walls and execute big jumps around the environment.

Titans, on the other hand, fall on the battlefield and pilots need to rush towards their location in order to control the giant robots. Each different Titan type is equipped with different weapons and secondary abilities, suited to various play styles.

Besides the hectic first-person shooter action, Titanfall promises to add in the online matches different story elements that further flesh out the world and the main plot.

There are two main warring factions, the Interstellar Manufacturing Corporation and the Militia, which fight each other on a war-torn planet filled with all sorts of different environments.

Why it matters:

The first-person shooter genre continues to perform really well in terms of sales and has proven time and time again that there's still room for innovation.

Factor in the experience of the Respawn team and the new elements brought forth by Titanfall, and the result sounds quite appealing, as highlighted by the many awards earned by the game based on demos from different game shows.

Even so, Respawn is still a small studio so it's going to be interesting to see just what it can do with the new game.

Titanfall launches on March 11 in North America and March 13 in Europe, for the PC, Xbox One, and Xbox 360.
