What we know:

The Elder Scrolls Online finally takes the popular role-playing game franchise developed by Bethesda and turns it into an online multiplayer experience, thanks to the team at Zenimax Online Studios.

The new game follows a story taking place 1,000 years before the events of The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim, the latest single-player installment in the series.

A war with three main factions is the central conflict, as the Aldmeri Dominion, the Daggerfall Covenant, and the Ebonheart Pact fight for control of the Ruby Throne, which governs all of Tamriel. Meanwhile, the Daedric prince Molag Bal also has his own agenda for the continent.

Players will be able to choose from the many races in the rich universe, from humans like the Nords, the Bretons, or the Redguard, to Elfs like the Altmer, Dunmer, or Bosmer, but also the more exotic ones like the Orcs, Khajit, or Argonians.

Many areas of Tamriel will be offered at launch, while other zones will be opened up via expansions and DLC.

The game will be available for a one-time charge and then a monthly subscription is required to keep playing it.

Why it matters:

The Elder Scrolls series has a rich universe with many races and all sorts of supernatural elements, meaning it can work rather well as an online experience.

In theory, the team at Zenimax Online Studios has a lot of experience with such titles and has experimented for over 5 years in order to deliver the new title and make it as appealing as ever.

As such, it's going to be interesting to see if the MMO can hold a candle to the single-player installments in the series made by Bethesda.

The Elder Scrolls Online launches for PC and Mac on April 4, while the PS4 and Xbox One editions of the MMORPG will debut in June
