What we know:

Super Smash Bros. is the next installment in the hit fighting game franchise from Nintendo and, for the first time in its history, it will debut on two platforms simultaneously, in the form of the Wii U home console and the 3DS portable one.

Like previous projects, the main development is handled by Sora, but this time around Namco Bandai is also helping out, all under Nintendo's strict supervision.

The new game will once again allow up to four players to face off against each other in all sorts of different levels, while controlling some of the most popular video game characters owned by Nintendo, but also by the likes of Capcom, for example.

In terms of actual fighters, many Nintendo classics return, including Mario, Luigi, Bowser, Donkey Kong, Link, Fox McCloud, Kirby, Princess Peach, Pikachu, Samus Aran, or Zelda. Characters owned by other publishers are also featured, including Sega's Sonic or Capcom's Mega Man.

In terms of all-new fighters, so far Rosalina, the Animal Crossing Villager, and the Wii Fit Trainer have been confirmed. Expect, however, to hear much more about the game and its roster of characters in the future.

Why it matters:

Super Smash Bros. titles still represent the gold standard for all-star fighting games, delivering fun yet complex experiences that require a lot of skill but are also open to beginners.

The fact that Nintendo is bringing the game to both the Wii U and 3DS is also important, as no one will be left out.

What's more, seeing as how Nintendo's consoles aren't doing so well in terms of sales, expect the company to really invest in the new game and make sure it's a system seller.

Super Smash Bros. is set to be launched on the Nintendo Wii U and 3DS platforms later this year but, so far, the Japanese company hasn't confirmed an actual release date.
