What we know: Sunset Overdrive is a shooter with open world elements that’s being created by Insomniac Games and will be published by Microsoft exclusively on the Xbox One home consoles.

The studio working on it has not offered a full rundown of the story, but gamers will have to deal with a post-apocalyptic world where resources are scarce and violence is the best way to secure access to items and important locations.

The combat is expected to be built around agility and impressive modes, with jump pads and zip lines used to move players around the arenas quickly.

This will create very fluid tactical situations where all those who want to be successful need to adapt fast.

Insomniac Games says that the look of the game and the design of the weapons and items will reflect its playful character and will remind long-term fans of Spyro and Ratchet & Clank.

The cloud gaming elements of the Xbox One will be used in the new title to allow the development team to quickly create new content and encourage players to share experiences.

At the moment, neither of the two companies has hinted at an official launch window for Sunset Overdrive and it might be pushed into 2015.

Why it matters: Insomniac is best known for its work on the PlayStation 3 and a move to Xbox One exclusivity might mean that more developers could move between platforms in the coming years.

The company has disappointed a lot of its hardcore fan base with its latest release, Fuse, and Sunset Overdrive is a great occasion for it to create a new shooter experience with open world elements and social aspects that can power a long-term franchise on Microsoft hardware.
