Can Obsidian and Ubisoft deliver a great experience worthy of the name?

What we know:

South Park has been a staple of the entertainment industry for quite some time and, despite featuring computer-generated visuals and a huge universe of characters and adventures, games based on the TV show have been few, far in between, and of a relatively poor quality.

As such, creators Trey Parker and Matt Stone approached Obsidian Entertainment, the studio behind Fallout: New Vegas or Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic 2, to create a proper role-playing game based on the popular show.

The result is South Park: The Stick of Truth, a game that puts players in the shoes of a new kid who has just moved into the small Colorado town, which is currently engaged in a fantasy war for the mythical Stick of Truth.

The two main factions, one led by Cartman and the other by the rest of the main crew, are fighting for supremacy and use all sorts of powerful and over-the-top weapons, from farts, to flashlights, and everything in-between.

The actual game is a turn-based RPG with fights happening between different groups of characters. Players control their own player but also the rest of the current party, using items, attacks, and even magic to try and eliminate enemies.

Why it matters:

While its popularity may have lowered over the years, the current season of the show, which features quite a few hints towards the action from the upcoming game, is looking really good, managing to tackle all sorts of different themes.

Couple this with the great experience Obsidian has in terms of RPGs and The Stick of Truth could end up becoming a benchmark by which all other TV-based games should be judged.

South Park: The Stick of Truth launches on March 4 in North America, and March 7 in Europe, for the PC, PS3, and Xbox 360.
