What we know:

Plants vs. Zombies: Garden Warfare promises to bring a brand new take on the traditional tower defense franchise made by PopCap Games, transforming the conflict between plants and zombies into a third-person multiplayer shooter.

While at first this sort of transformation may sound a bit awkward, based on recent gameplay videos, the result is a pretty hilarious and hectic experience that adds a lot of brand new elements to the series.

Both plants and zombies now have different weapons to combat each other as well as all sorts of gadgets, items, and abilities that can be deployed for a much wider effect.

PopCap promises that players will be able to customize their units with all sorts of different elements and that each will have an impact in terms of actual gameplay.

Besides the traditional Deathmatch game type, the multiplayer title will also feature Gardens & Graveyards, which is based on the Conquest and Domination modes from the Battlefield games, and should offer a more strategy-based experience.

Throw in other special elements like the Xbox One-exclusive SmartGlass functionality, and Garden Warfare is looking set to bring plenty of innovation into the very popular franchise.

Why it matters:

Plants vs. Zombies amazed the whole world when it first appeared, and its recent escapades into the realm of Facebook, through Garden Adventures, and mobile, through Plants vs. Zombies 2: It's About Time, have brought plenty of people back to the franchise.

With Garden Warfare, PopCap wants to show that the series isn't a one-trick-pony and that it can be a full-fledged game even in a tough genre like the third-person shooter one.

Based on what we saw up until now, the title is looking rather good and the experience seems fun. As such, it's up to PopCap to make sure that the end result is the same and that players will enjoy this fresh take on the Plants vs. Zombies series.

Plants vs. Zombies: Garden Warfare launches February 18, in North America, and February 20, in Europe, for the Xbox One and Xbox 360, while a PC edition will follow after that.
