Epic's long-awaited cooperative game still hasn't showed up

What we know:

Fortnite was proudly announced by Epic Games a few years ago as the first of its Unreal Engine 4-powered games, designed to showcase the new technology that was currently being developed by the big studio.

The Unreal Engine 4 had only been revealed up until that point via special technology demonstrations, and Fortnite was supposed to really show off the power of Epic's next-gen technology.

In terms of actual gameplay, Fortnite is a cooperative experience in which players team up to explore an open world by day, hunting for supplies and loot, and fight against evil monsters who only appear at night.

The game's emphasis is on survival as well as on crafting, as players can use their different items alongside blueprints to upgrade their fortress or create new weapons and contraptions.

A procedural creation system also ensures a high factor of replayability but, as of yet, Epic Games hasn't revealed anything else about the project, which is now being developed by its Epic Games Poland subsidiary, formerly known as People Can Fly.

Why it matters:

Next-gen consoles are already available for purchase and, as of yet, Epic Games still hasn't released or at least helped release a game made with Unreal Engine 4.

As with Gears of War and the Unreal Engine 3, a highly successful first game is more than needed in order to show what the engine can do.

People Can Fly has already demonstrated its skills with the underrated Bulletstorm and, if there's one team that can bring Fortnite to fruition, it's the Polish studio.

Unfortunately, Epic Games is still reluctant to share any details about the long-awaited game, so let's hope we learn more soon enough.

Fortnite is set to debut sometime this year for PC and maybe even PS4 or Xbox One.
