What we know:

Dying Light is the next big project from Polish developer Techland, responsible for recent franchises like Dead Island or Call of Juarez.

While it will still feature zombies, just like Dead Island, Techland has placed the new project in another genre, that of the first-person action one, throwing in all sorts of new elements such as free-running and much more.

Players take control of a survivor of a zombie apocalypse which has turned a lot of the population into undead. They must explore the world in order to find supplies, rescue other survivors, and set up traps around their safe houses.

While during the day these infected don't pose that big of a challenge, things change during the night. At that time, the undead become much more aggressive, inflicting more damage and gaining the ability to also engage in free-running and sprinting after the player.

What's more, in the dark, the special Night Hunter will also appear, which is a deadly kind of infected that can easily kill players.

In order to survive in the darkness, players have access to a special Night Sense ability, which shows the undead in their vicinity.

Why it matters:

Dying Light may seem like just another zombie game, but the pretty novel premise of the undead getting special abilities during the night, as well as the free-running mechanics, adds quite a few fresh things to the old recipe.

Techland also promises that a variety of brand new visual technologies will be used by the game to make the transition between night and day even that much more impressive. Throw in the great and gruesome character models, not to mention the emphasis on crafting, and it looks like Dying Light might be a winner.

Dying Light will appear this year for the PC, PS3, Xbox 360, PS4, and Xbox One platforms.
