What we know:

Destiny is an upcoming massively multiplayer online first person shooter with role-playing elements, set in a mythical science fiction universe.

It is currently in development at Bungie, the creators of the Halo franchise, and will be published by Call of Duty handler Activision.

Bungie mentioned on several occasions how the game’s universe will be entirely dynamic, with unscripted events taking place in the game world and influencing the playing experience.

The game’s visual design direction has been revealed to be influenced by old historical trends and concepts, rather than being entirely focused on futuristic elements.

Players will be able to experiment with weapons and craft unique items that serve in different situations, allowing the same piece of equipment to be tweaked differently in order to better serve a certain scenario.

All in-game weapons and armor will gain experience and level-up as the players use them in battle, offering them the option to choose what they want to evolve in the long term.

Why it matters:

Destiny is designed to allow its players to evolve their characters and customize their builds in many ways, with the team’s goal being to present a wide variety of options.

The shooter will be influenced by the progression options available in role-playing MMOs, but it will still retain focus on fast-paced shooter-specific combat.

Bungie intends to really push the limits of the first person shooter genre, with the customization options specific to role-playing games and the social features planned, allowing players to complete challenges both solo and by grouping with others, but emphasizing on group play for tackling more challenging end-game objectives.

Destiny is scheduled for release in September, 2014, on the PlayStation 3, PlayStation 4, Xbox 360 and Xbox One platforms.
