What we know:

Carmageddon: Reincarnation will be the 4th vehicular combat game in the Carmageddon series. It is currently in development over at Stainless Games, creators of the original game and its sequel. Carmageddon is a graphically violent vehicular combat and racing game, originally inspired by the cult movie Death Race 2000. Races are completed by either competing in the traditional fashion, either ignoring the boring part and spending your time collecting bonuses, running over pedestrians, performing daring stunts and thrashing your competitors.

Stainless Games reacquired the rights to the Carmageddon brand in 2011, announcing that the independent title Carmageddon: Reincarnation was already in development.

By 2012, they have announced a Kickstarter project meant to secure the necessary funds for a whole new Carmageddon: Reincarnation game.

The success of the crowdfunding campaign along with an unexpected substantial investment in the game led its developers to expand the scope of the game, announcing to their backers that the initial release date would be pushed back.

Why it matters:

When Carmageddon first came out in 1997, there was much controversy surrounding its violent content, but the game's solid gameplay and many innovations (including the first ever fully-featured physics engine) helped secure the title's place in the hall of fame of the ‘90s.

A modern-day iteration of such a high-quality concept, as wrecking your opponent's cars into oblivion in order to be king of the circuit, would prove an intriguing alternative to the more realistic driving experiences available for racing enthusiasts.

Stainless Games have stated their objective to be reintroducing the gaming world to the original concept of freeform driving, placing gamers behind the wheel of an automotive killing machine bent on destruction.

The game is currently scheduled for release on Steam Early Access, in the first quarter of 2014. The final release platforms are intended to be the PC, Xbox One and PlayStation 4.
