Activision is preparing a brand new installment of the first-person shooter series

What we know:

Activision has made the Call of Duty series into a yearly franchise for quite some time and, after last year's Call of Duty: Ghosts, you can bet that work is already being completed on the next installment, temporarily known as Call of Duty 2014.

Seeing as how Ghosts was made by franchise founder Infinity Ward, with help from Raven Software and NeverSoft, it's likely that the next game will appear from either Treyarch, the developer of 2012's Black Ops 2, or Sledgehammer Games, which helped Infinity Ward to create 2011's Modern Warfare 3, and has since been working on its own project.

Despite a massive marketing campaign and plenty of new features, Ghosts didn't exactly herald a new age for the series, so it's possible that Activision wants to see what the other studios have in store and then invest in a new spinoff series, in a similar way to Modern Warfare.

You can expect even more enhancements to be made to the franchise's core gameplay engine, as while some improvements were made with Ghosts, it's still not looking as good as its competitors.

In terms of multiplayer, once again expect a blend of competitive and cooperative, and in Treyarch's case the return of the Zombies experience.

Why it matters:

Hate it or love it, the Call of Duty franchise is a big part of the gaming industry and brings plenty of money not just to Activision and its studios, but also to hardware manufacturers, while entertaining millions of fans from around the world.

Its huge scope also prompts a great rivalry with other franchises, like Battlefield, leading to increases in quality for those games as well.

Based on Activision's previous release strategy, expect Call of Duty 2014 to appear at the beginning of November for a wide variety of platforms, including PC, PS3, Xbox 360, Wii U, PS4, or Xbox One.
