What we know:

Assassin's Creed 4: Black Flag had been released for a few weeks when Ubisoft confirmed that a new game in the series was going to debut in 2014, so at least its existence is undisputed.

In terms of many other aspects, however, Assassin's Creed 5 (aka Assassin's Creed 2014) is still a closely guarded secret by Ubisoft and its many different global teams.

After the successful return of the series with Black Flag, which washed away the many problems of 2012's Assassin's Creed 3, Ubisoft has the tough job of raising the bar and delivering an even better experience.

Given that the adventures of Edward Kenway were concluded in Black Flag, you can expect a brand new protagonist and a new historical period to be introduced. Ubisoft teased many possible settings and, seeing as how it's not afraid to go back or forward in time, anything is possible.

Even so, you can bet that the core development team at Ubisoft Montreal, together with the many other global studios, has a good idea of what to do with the franchise, especially after the great reception of Black Flag.

Why it matters:

The Assassin's Creed series may have shown signs of fatigue with Assassin's Creed 3, but Black Flag proved that there was still a lot of life left in the franchise.

The 2014 installment has a tough job ahead of it, but Ubisoft has gotten fans used to new experiences every year and it's not stopping now.

Let's just hope that the publisher's many teams will once again work together without any problems and that everything will go smoothly.

Based on Ubisoft's existing strategy for the Assassin's Creed series, you can expect the 2014 installment to appear towards the end, probably around late October or November for all sorts of platforms, including PC, PS3, Xbox 360, Wii U, PS4, and Xbox One.
