Can the survival horror experience honor the franchise?

What we know:

Alien games have offered some mixed experiences over the years and what was meant to be one of the best, Aliens: Colonial Marines, was a controversial failure, delivering a bad combination of disappointing gameplay and lackluster story.

Sega quickly tasked the team at Creative Assembly, who has already proved itself with the popular Total War series, with creating a first-person survival horror experience, in the form of Alien: Isolation.

The result was made official earlier this month and it's looking pretty good.

The game puts players in the shoes of Amanda Ripley, the daughter of Ellen Ripley, the protagonist of the first Alien film from 1979.

She, alongside her friends, must survive on a derelict space station that's being ransacked by one big and imposing Xenomorph alien.

There will be a much bigger emphasis on horror and suspense, especially since there's just one quite powerful Alien, instead of the hordes seen in Colonial Marines.

Not much else is known, but players will be in for quite a few scares while trying to survive Isolation.

Why it matters:

The Alien universe is a rich and complex one and its action lends itself to many different genres. While the shooter made by Gearbox failed to live up to expectations, the survival experience from Creative Assembly seems to not repeat that mistake.

The fact that there's a single Alien is also quite intriguing and will certainly make the inevitable confrontation with the Xenomorph that much more impressive and terrifying.

Even so, after getting burned with Colonial Marines, fans will certainly be reticent to pre-order or even try out Isolation.

Alien: Isolation is set to launch towards the end of 2014 for the PC, PS3, Xbox 360, PS4, and Xbox One platforms. A Wii U edition has already been ruled out by Sega and Creative Assembly.
