A new more realistic take on the zombie survival genre

What we know:

Zombies have been much in demand lately and they have managed to power success both in the television world and in the video game space.

But no matter how good Dead Island might have been, no game has yet managed to capture the social interactions on which shows like Walking Dead focus.

Dead State is the game aiming to change that, focusing on how the survivors of a zombie apocalypse somewhere in central Texas will work together or turn on one another as the threat from the undead grows.

The zombies will be of the slow variety and the developers plan to make the ways in which humanity is transformed by the catastrophe the central story of the game.

They promise that gamers will have the freedom to do whatever they want in order to ensure their survival, from exploring for supplies to increasing the defenses of the home base, which is a school.

There are also promises that each character the player will meet will have a defined personality, with problems and goals, and some of them will inevitably clash with that of the protagonist.

The battle phase of Dead State will be turn based and very tactical, close in a lot of ways to those seen in the classic X-COM games.

At the moment, DoubleBear Productions plans to launch Dead State exclusively on the PC at some point during 2012.

Why it matters: DoubleBear is led by a number of developers who have worked for both Obsidian and Troika, two developers that are known for their innovation if not for the solidity of their releases.

Dead State might very well become the classic Fallout of 2012 if it manages to seamlessly blend story, gameplay and interactions between characters.
