Publisher Devolver Digital and developer Dennaton Games have teamed up with Dayjob Studio, an Italian art collective, in order to bring a Hotline Miami 2: Wrong Number comic to life.

The five-part comic series will be released for free on Steam, and it will explore the backstory of the gruesome events that took place in Hotline Miami, the first installment of the ultra-violent top-down action series.

The comic also introduces some of the new playable characters, as well as the factions that will pop up in the neon-drenched, pixelated and bloody sequel, Hotline Miami 2: Wrong Number.

Just like the games, the comics feature people in animal masks doing bad things, and the impact of those bad things on those around them.

The comics are viewable in a special application on Steam, and readers can also enjoy samples of the game's superb soundtrack while perusing the story.

For the time being, the first two issues are available, with the remaining three to be released before the release of the game.

It's always fun to have some context to all the mindless violence, and the comics provide a neat something to tide you over until the game comes out.

Hotline Miami 2: Wrong Number is expected to come out sometime during Q1 2015, on Steam.
