Video game developer IO Interactive has launched the first edition of the Hope News Times, a newspaper published in Hope, South Dakota which is set to promote the upcoming Hitman: Absolution.

The publication will be weekly and will report the news around town while offering background for the game universe.

Publisher Square Enix says that the citizens of Hope are “heavily influenced by local legend Blake Dexter” and by the presence of his company.

The arrival of Agent 47 sets off a number of strange incidents that the newspaper reports.

A new edition of the Hope News Times will arrive every Thursday until the launch of the game.

Hitman: Absolution is still being prepared for a 2012 launch on the Xbox 360, the PlayStation 3 and the PC.

The game will mix the traditional concepts of the Hitman series with a modern action focus and mechanics destined to appeal to a larger group of players.
