The hardware needs to be standardized and capable of running SteamOS

Ricky Lee, the marketing manager at iBuyPower, says that most of the high-end devices that were recently unveiled under the Steam machine brand during CES 2014 are missing the point of Valve’s vision for the future of hardware.

14 companies have showed off a variety of configurations and prices, all of them in the prototype stage.

The iBuyPower executive says that a Steam machine should be designed to offer enough power to run PC games, support the SteamOS and the new Valve controller, according to The Escapist.

Anything more than that just adds unnecessary costs and makes it harder to compete with the Xbox One from Microsoft and the PlayStation 4 from Sony.

Valve says that it has no plans to manufacture its own Steam hardware.

Official launches for the computers that can run SteamOS are expected to take place later during the year.
