Phantasm Studios started the campaign before securing the rights to the title from Capcom

Ghosts'N Goblins is an arcade smash hit from 1985 that pits players against hordes of monsters, filling the shoes of the knight Arthur in his quest to rescue the princess.

Phantasm Studios, the team behind the Kickstarter project, stated they intend to develop the game with or without Capcom's blessing, and that if negotiations with the publisher should fail, they will just change the name of their game and release it anyway.

Indie dev Phantasm Studios started their Kickstarter campaign during late October, and now it seems the page has already been closed, following the intellectual property dispute.

There is no official word from the game studio concerning the potential suspension of the project, and the game page on their official site is still live, as NintendoLife reports.

The developers initially justified their move by using a similar situation that occurred in 1980, when “Shigeru Miyamoto of Nintendo created a Popeye video game but couldn't get the rights from King Features. He transformed Popeye to Mario, Bluto to Donkey Kong, and Olive Oyl to the Princess. This was the birth of Donkey Kong.”
