Gabe Newell, the leader of Valve, says that when his company started working on the Steam digital distribution system, a number of developers believed that the idea was really bad and would have preferred to spend time on Half-Life 2.

He is quoted by VG247 as saying that, “Then we tried to do Steam. There were a bunch of people internally who thought Steam was a really bad idea, but what they didn’t think was that they would tell the people who were working on Steam what to do with their time.”

At the moment, Steam is the most important digital distribution system on the PC and both Sony and Microsoft are struggling to create something similar on the Xbox One and the PlayStation 4.

Valve is currently working on expanding the feature set of the service and has a number of concepts in beta, which will be revealed to the public in 2014.

The company is also getting ready to deliver the SteamOS and associated hardware during the current year.
